Excerpt: Moses at the First Thanksgiving? Because of God’s leadership in bringing the people from slavery in Egypt into the Promised Land, the people pledge to bring the first fruits of their “land of milk and honey.”(1) It is not just a repayment scheme to pay off a debt from the past, it is a ritual recognition that every good gift in every time and place comes from God. Jesus resists the world’s temptations in the certain knowledge that “Not on bread alone shall man live,” and that we should not put God to the test. (3) Do the first fruits of our labors return to their source? Or is God only second or third or worse on our list?
