FIRST
RECONCILIATION
Healing from sinfulness and illnesses of
all kinds was a major part of Jesus’ ministry. It is also a major part of
the Church’s ministry. The Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of
the Anointing of the Sick are the two main ways the Church makes present
God’s healing and forgiveness. Children first begin to learn of God’s
healing love and forgiveness in the family where they hear “I love you” ;“I
am sorry” and “I forgive you.”
The formal preparation for
the Sacrament of Reconciliation begins in the First Grade and continues in
the Second Grade. Parents play a primary role in the preparation of the
children for the sacraments. During January and February of the Second
Grade year, parents and children participate in two “Family Sessions” at the
parish on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The sessions are followed by
activities in the home and by instruction for the children in the Sunday
morning PSR classes. The Celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is
held at the Parish Lenten Communal Penance Service.
