Excerpt: Abraham bargains with God to save the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, but try though he might, not ten righteous souls can be found in the whole city. (1) We, too, try to bargain with God. Most of the time, however, we don’t bargain for the sake of the righteous but for our own sake. Jesus teaches his disciples to pray for their daily bread. (3) Let our prayers for ourselves be that we have enough, but not too much. Let our prayers for others be that God preserve and keep them in his mercy.

Excerpt: Abraham took the virtue of hospitality seriously. When he saw three men standing about in the hot sun he ran out to meet them and insisted that they come and rest at his tent. (1) The opportunity to do good presents itself every once in a while, but many of us tire ourselves by running after it too far or too fast. The best investors do not wait for an opportunity to invest to come down the road – they run and seek out opportunities. The best stewards to don’t wait for God to provide opportunities to use time, talent and treasure – they seek out good investments in the currency of good deeds.

Excerpt: “I’m not a mind reader you know! I can’t tell what God has in mind for me!” Really? Moses seemed to think otherwise: “For this command which I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say ‘Who will go up in the sky for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’ It is not across the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea and get it for us and tell us of it that we may carry it out?’ No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out.” (1) You will know in your heart of hearts when you are a good and faithful steward of God’s gifts to you.

Excerpt: Everyone is inadequately prepared. We are sent into the world without a walking stick, traveling bag or sandals. (3) We are, however, sent two-by-two. Each of us must contribute to the spreading of the gospel to the best of our ability. If, of course, it were only up to us we might be doomed to failure. But, “The Lord’s power shall be known to his servants.” (1) “All that matters is that one is created anew.” (2) We have been created anew in baptism. We are free to hold nothing back in our service, for only in our service do we imitate the love of God in Christ.

Excerpt: “It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!”(2) Elijah calls Elisha and Jesus calls his followers to come without looking back. (1&3) Some people find it necessary to keep lists of all the things they want to or must accomplish. A list for the sake of memory can be a very helpful thing. Just be certain that God’s will is the first thing on any list you make, and be prepared to forget about the rest of the list. God has great plans for us. It would be foolish to think we can make better ones.

Excerpt: “There does not exist among you Jew or Greek, slave or freeman, male or female. All are one in Christ.” (2) If we have indeed become one in Christ we may have to take up the cross each day and follow in the steps of the Lord. (3) Stewardship implies sacrificial giving. But any sadness we encounter in this world is as nothing compared to the glory of the resurrection. As valuable as all our time, all our talent, and all our treasures may appear, they are nothing unless handed over to God. “Whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” (3) All that we have is from God. All that will survive is that which goes toward God.

Excerpt: The forgiveness of sins comes from God. It is a gift. It cannot be purchased for it was purchased once and for all in the death of Christ. The reason we are concerned with the quality of our stewardship of God’s gifts is not the hope of “buying heaven” with our good deeds or charity. The reasons we are concerned with the quality of our stewardship is that it is only a fair thing to try to make a return, however inadequate, for all the good which God has accomplished for us.

Excerpt: It is true that each of us have gifts that differ. Some have many more material goods than others. Some are blessed with artistic abilities while others “can barely draw breath, have two left feet and can’t carry a tune in a bucket.” Some live long and busy lives and others struggle with health or disabilities. The celebration of the body and blood of Christ reminds us that though our gifts differ we can all give the same great gift that God has given us. Jesus became the gift he gave. We have life through his body and blood. We, too, can become the gift we give. Our return to the Lord cannot be measured in dollars and cents or by artistic merit or by length of days. Our return to the Lord must be marked by the selfless-ness of our giving. Our use of time, talent and treasure must be patterned after the sacrificial gift given to us by Christ. When we learn to become the sustenance for one another we truly become the Body of Christ which we celebrate.

Excerpt: At least once every few years one sweepstakes, contest, lottery or another, rediscovers the idea of a prize involving “as much as you can catch or carry.” Often this takes the form of a booth filled with dollar bills blown around by a strong fan. One wins as much as one can catch in a minute. Blown by the strong wind of the Spirit, we have received as gifts far more than we can carry. We are given a share in the unity of Christ and the Father in that same Holy Spirit. How much we “win” depends not on what we can hold on to, but on what we are able to give in lives of love & service. We claim to be created in the image of God. Part of that image is the unity of the Trinity. How have we built up the unity of the body of Christ using the gifts of time, talent and treasure?

Excerpt: “To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (2) Everyone present at that first Pentecost was able to understand the preaching of the apostles’ regardless of native tongue. (1) Our time, talent and treasure must also be the means for us to make a clear and unambiguous sign. If our lives proclaim anything other than Christ and the love he has shown us through his life, death and resurrection we are not yet on the mark. “Actions speak louder than words.” Our every thought, word and action must point unequivocally to our risen Lord.
